How to read a poem

how_to_read_a_poem

You can’t just read a poem once
quickly,
and expect to love it.
Not like that.
You have to give it space
and time.
Because timing matters
in loving a poem.
And so, you need to try,
Read it again,
multiple times,
until the time is right
and the poem speaks to you.

You have to read it
as soon as you wake up,
in the quiet of a Saturday afternoon,
At 9pm on a weekday with the TV blaring at you,
While waiting in line for expensive coffee,
on a train ride,
and so on…

Only then have you loved,
and read
a poem.
